House of Music is the main concert hall in Porto, Portugal.
It was designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, as part of the European Capital of Culture – Porto in 2001, immediately becoming a city icon.
The architecture of the building was internationally acclaimed. Nicolai Ouroussoff, architectural critic of The New York Times, classified it as “the most appealing design that the architect Rem Koolhaas has ever constructed” and as “a building whose intellectual ardor is combined with its sensual beauty.” He also compares it to the exuberant project of the Guggenheim Museum of the architect Frank Gehry in Bilbao, Spain. “Looking only at the original aspect of the building, it is verified that this is one of the most important show rooms built in the last 100 years,” comparing it to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, in Los Angeles and the auditorium of the “Berlin Philharmonic”.
